Mounting an Attached Volume to a Windows Server Instance

Step 1:

With the volume attached, open ‘disk management’ from the control panel. Upon being attached to a running instance, it only takes a moment for the volume to dynamically appear in this menu.

The volume is connected but is currently offline.
Right clicking the box which contains the name of the opens a drop down menu that contains a button to turn on the disk.

Turn on the disk.
Step 2:

Right click the same box from earlier to open the dropdown menu, this time click on initialize disk to create a new partition table.

The initialize disk menu will appear, select GPT from the radio button list (to learn more about GPT please visit https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/dn640535(v=vs.85).aspx ) and push okay to create the new partition table.
Step 3:

Right click the wider box that shows the unallocated disk space and select new simple volume to open the partition creation wizard.

Click next to continue.

If a single partition is being created in this volume, the default volume size is the 100% of the available space.

If there will be more than one partition, enter the size of the current partition in the simple volume size in MB.

Clicking next opens the menu where a drive letter for this partition can be selected from the dropdown menu.

The partition can also be mounted in an empty folder, or without any path.

Clicking next opens the format partition menu.

Here there are options to change the file system from NTFS to ReFS FAT32, change the allocation unit size from default, and assigning the volume a name.

There are also check boxes for a quick format and folder compression.

Clicking next opens the details of what has been selected, review the chosen settings for accuracy and then click finish to create the partition.

The created partition will now appear in windows file explorer.
